All About Steve…

When someone says a movie is bad, I typically run away from it – at least for a while. This movie was no different… but finally it came up in the NetFlix queue and, well, I was lazy and forgot to move something ahead of it.

Now I’m glad that happened.

You see, I was home sick this weekend recovering from a bout of bronchitis… and by Sunday afternoon it was either watch the Lions lose to the Giants (although it apparently turned out to be a fairly close game) or watch “All About Steve.”

So I watched the movie.

Warning you now that there will probably be spoilers ahead… I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a movie reviewer, especially when I want to share something that moved me. But if you don’t plan to rent the movie anyway… read on! :)

Movie Synopsis: The story is about a woman named Mary who is set up on a blind date with a guy named Steve by their parents. She immediately falls for him and follows him around the country as news stories happen. But a strange thing happens as she is doing this – she realizes who really cares about her.

It really wasn’t until the end of the movie that I {and I am sure the rest of the audience} got it all. If you made it to the end that is. (Trust me, the beginning is a bit painful to watch.)

The movie is really about each and every one of us. We all want to fit in. We all want to be loved. We all want to feel like we have a special place in this world.

And I think those of us that are bloggers or the social media types can really identify. Those who the general population may see as geeks, nerds or even “mommy bloggers” as some would have it. People journeying through life when we are not necessarily embraced by what popular culture says is normal.

There are a couple of quotes at the end of the movie that really bring this all together…

“New York Times crossword editor Wil Shortz says,’We have a natural compulsion to fill empty spaces.’ I like to think he means not just crosswords, but the empty spaces inside of us… that come from making your way in a world that doesn’t always embrace unique.”

And in my opinion the last line of the movie sums this up best…

“On the journey of life, just find someone as normal as you – if not a whole bunch.”

When we go to events such as Bloggy Boot Camp or participate in our local blog meetings, we feel at home with our friends. No one is exactly like one another… but yet whether we are a creative maven, a savvy shopper or an aspiring writer, we have this connection that brings us together.

That’s what blogging has done for me. I have found some of my closest friends here. And I wouldn’t change that for the world.

And now if a “Steve” would come into my life… I know that I won’t abandon this world. I need this. The connections. The creativity. The friendships. Because if I gave it up then I would just create an empty space inside of me. I would miss this bunch of “someones” a whole lot.

Have you seen “All About Steve”? What did you think?
Have you found that this fills an “empty space” in your life too?

I haven’t seen the movie, but I love Sandra Bullock. That was the movie with her right?

And I totally agree with your analysis without even having seen the movie.

I remember hearing about it, but don’t really know anyone who watched it.

It sounds like it’s something you’d recommend though.

If you have a “natural compulsion to fill empty spaces”, all you really have to do is read some fiction with a highlighter! #justsayin lol ;)

I’m so glad I came across this blog. I may be 2 years late, but I wanted to say something. This entry made me feel better. Right now I am dealing with things, and I adore Mary Horowitz for not conforming to the world, because most of the time, I can’t seem to do away with it. Thank you and have a blessed year!
